According to MARTA spokesperson Stephany Fisher, the contractor was in a work vehicle on the rails near the station when it was hit by a train.

The contractor was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. He has since died.

There were no reported injuries from the passengers, and rail operators were able to safely offload riders.

"It felt like we hit something and when we looked out the window there was a guy screaming to call 911 and then the workers were all on their phones trying to get a hold of somebody," passenger Katelynn Smith said.

Responding to the incident, MARTA said that "safety is our top priority and we will thoroughly investigate."
