DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A convicted murderer who walked away from a DeKalb County courthouse has been arrested in Columbia, South Carolina, according to DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
Taiquan Mitchell, 24, was apprehended Wednesday after, authorities say, he left a courtroom as a jury returned its verdict on October 3.
The jury found Mitchell and co-defendant Deon Dorset guilty of malice murder, four counts of
felony murder, one count of aggravated assault, first degree burglary, two counts of criminal attempt to
commit a felony and possession of a firearm stemming from a crime in January 2014.
Authorities said Mitchell was out on a $125,000 bond so he was allowed to leave the courthouse whenever he wanted to during the trial.
But when he wasn’t in the courtroom when the verdicts were read, authorities figured out Mitchell wasn't coming back.
Sources told FOX 5 Mitchell cut off his ankle bracelet, managed to destroy it and walked out of the courthouse.
Mitchell is awaiting extradition back to Georgia.
