FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Four vehicles were involved in the early Sunday morning crash that closed all lanes of Interstate 295EB for several hours, according to Sandy Springs Police Department.
Police said there had already been an accident in the area that slowed down traffic. They said an impaired driver rear-ended a construction vehicle at the scene of the first accident, hitting a North Perimeter Contractors worker and an off-duty Morehouse School of Medicine police officer.
Both are in critical condition at local hospitals. Officials said the officer is now stable, the contractor worker's injuries are life-threatening.
The impaired driver has non-life threatening injuries.
That driver was handed over to the Sandy Springs Police Department. The Georgia State Patrol has been asked to investigate the DUI.
