Crews rescue ‘badly’ burned bear from Nevada wildfire

As crew continues to battle a massive wildfire in Western Nevada, a glimmer of hope has emerged as crew members rescued a bear after finding him with severe burns.

Last week, the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District responded to a report of an injured bear off of Granite Ridge Road in Washoe Valley.

"Out of the chaos of the Davis Fire comes a nugget of hope," crews said on social media on Sept. 18. "The bear was badly hurt with burnt paws and burn marks around his face and mouth."

They said the Nevada Department of Wildlife was immediately notified, adding that its crews assisted the department in transporting the bear to receive treatment.

According to InciWeb, the Davis Fire, which has scorched 5824 acres, is currently 92% contained.

The official website for wildfire incident data said that crews continue to look for heat, mop up hot spots, and patrol containment lines. Additionally, ground resources continue with suppression repair.

Earlier this month, officials announced evacuations, which impacted between 12,000 and 14,000 residents. The Washoe County School District also canceled classes at nine schools on Tuesday because of the Davis Fire's impact on the community and for the safety of students, staff and faculty, the school district said in a Facebook post
