Deadly car fire shuts down part of I-85

Police say the car went off the road and caught fire after hitting a tree near where Interstate 285 meets Interstate 85.

One person has died in a car fire that shut down part of Interstate 285 in College Park Tuesday morning.

Officials have confirmed with FOX 5 that crews are working a car fire with possible explosions on the southbound lanes of the interstate at I-85.

The fire, which started around 5:30 a.m., has blocked multiple lanes on the interstate.

Investigators say the vehicle went off the pavement, down an embankment and crashed into a tree.

Responding officers found the victim dead inside the vehicle. The victim's identity has not been released.

The crash has shut down all lanes leading onto southbound I-285 near the wreck. Drivers should expect major delays and should try to plan alternate routes around the area.
