Weapon found at Decatur High School

Two Decatur high schools are on soft lockdown after officials say a weapon was found on campus.

Decatur High School was put on lockdown Friday morning after officials said a handgun was fired during a fight on campus.

Decatur police responded around 9:40 a.m. to the campus, which is located on N McDonough Street.

The school was placed on a hard lockdown for about an hour, but was shifted to a soft lockdown as the situation de-escalated.

Investigators say it started when two high school students got into an argument. At some point, a revolver was pulled out, causing one of the students to run into the parking lot in an attempt to get away, police said.

The student with a gun took off after the first, and ended up in a fight where investigators say a shot was fired. The second student was able to deflect the weapon.

A 15-year-old girl was taken into custody and was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon on school property, and possession of a firearm by a person under 18.

No one was injured.

Nearby Beacon Hill Middle School was also been put on soft lockdown due to police activity in the area.
