Decatur Police make arrest in deadly roadway shooting

DECATUR, Ga. - Police in Decatur said they arrested the man they believe opened fire from his car into a sedan Wednesday evening killing a teenager and injuring a woman.

The announcement came from the Decatur Police Department early Saturday morning about the arrest of 50-year-old Simmie R. Reed. Police said the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit took Reed into custody in the 2300 block of Tyler Way without incident after investigators received a tip.

"We believe that he killed somebody so to get somebody off the streets like that is huge for us," Decatur Police's Sgt. John Bender said. "Now we can bring some closure to Janae Owen's family."

Decatur Police said Thursday after released a picture of the car, believed to be a black Chrysler 200 or 300, taken from a nearby security camera, that an arrest for the deadly shooting was the city’s top priority.

The shooting happened at the intersection of South Candler Street and Midway Road around 5:48 p.m. Investigators said the gunman fired several shots as the sedan driver waited to turn onto Midway Road.

One of those bullets struck 17-year-old Janae Owens. She was rushed to an area hospital but later died.

Two other women were inside the car with Owens. Police said one was shot, but not seriously wounded. Investigators said they are related to the teenage murder victim but have not said if there's a connection to the gunman.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was asked to assist in the investigation.

Reed was booked into the DeKalb County Jail and charged with one count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault with intent to murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is expected to make his first appearance on Monday.
