DeKalb County Courthouse reopens after suspicious package scare

The DeKalb County Courthouse was evacuated due to a suspicious package found inside the Decatur building on Feb. 6, 2025.

Operations at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Decatur are expected to return to normal on Friday. 

This comes after a suspicious package forced the building to go on lockdown for several hours on Thursday morning.

What we know:

The courthouse was evacuated by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the DeKalb County Marshals after the package was discovered. Decatur Fire investigated the package, which was found in the DeKalb County Superior Court Clerk’s Office. According to DeKalb County, the envelope contained non-hazardous materials and posed no threat.

According to the DeKalb County Clerk of Superior Court, a green, gel-like substance was found in an envelope sent by a prison inmate.

What we don't know:

Investigators are trying to determine who sent the letter. The sender may face criminal charges.

What's next:

The courthouse returned to normal operations on Thursday afternoon and is expected to reopen on Friday without further incident.
