DeKalb County officials declare State of Emergency after winter storm

DeKalb County officials have declared a State of Emergency as a severe winter storm continues to create dangerous conditions throughout the region. CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson urged residents to stay off the roads and shelter in place, warning that subfreezing temperatures and widespread ice have made travel perilous.

County road crews have been working around the clock, spreading more than 500 tons of salt, sand, and calcium chloride in an effort to improve road conditions. However, with temperatures plummeting below 14°F, these treatments have had limited effectiveness. Key roads, including Rockbridge Road and River Road, remain severely impacted by ice, leaving many areas hazardous and difficult to navigate.

Emergency Response Efforts

What we know:

As of 7:15 a.m., DeKalb emergency services have responded to hundreds of 911 calls, including a structure fire and the urgent rescue of a pregnant woman heading to the hospital. Emergency crews are prioritizing critical incidents but are facing significant challenges due to icy roads. Some fire trucks have become stuck on untreated roads, slowing response times.

Stranded Vehicles Complicate Efforts

More than 100 vehicles have been reported stranded across the county, many obstructing emergency responders. Officials have reiterated the importance of avoiding travel to prevent further accidents and to ensure emergency crews can access those in need.

Ongoing Road Treatments

What's next:

County crews are focusing on creating safe routes to critical areas, but progress is slow. "This is a serious situation," CEO Cochran-Johnson said. "We are asking for everyone’s patience and cooperation as our teams work around the clock to ensure public safety. Staying off the roads is critical—not only for your safety but to allow emergency responders to reach those in need."

Residents are urged to monitor updates from DeKalb County officials and stay indoors until conditions improve.
