Growing number of Democrats call Biden to drop from race
President Joe Biden’s imperiled reelection campaign hit new trouble Wednesday as House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said merely "it’s up to the president to decide" if he should stay in the race, celebrity donor George Clooney said he should not run and Democratic senators and lawmakers expressed fresh fear about his ability to beat Republican Donald Trump. null - A majority of Democrats are calling for President Joe Biden to drop out of the race before the November election.
In a poll published Thursday by ABC News and the Washington Post, approximately 67% of respondents believe Biden should exit the race, with 85% saying the commander-in-chief is too old to serve another term in the White House.
Poll findings
All U.S. adults:
- 67% say Biden should step aside; 30% say he should run
Democrats only:
- 56% say Biden should step aside; 42% say he should run
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris gained support from respondents in the poll to supplant Biden as the Democratic nominee with 49% supporting Harris compared to 46% backing Donald Trump.
Another 60% polled said Trump is too old to serve a second term as president, an increase from 44% in the spring of 2023.

Democrats call on Biden to back out
This latest poll comes as Biden is facing pressure from some Democrats and his top donors to drop out of the race, with the latest being Democratic senator Peter Welch of Vermont.

Actor George Clooney, one of Biden's top donors, published a New York Times op-ed on Wednesday stating that he had no confidence in Biden’s ability to serve a second term.
Biden’s shaky debate performance against Trump on June 27 has apparently divided the Democratic Party on its view of the future. But despite his struggles in the first debate, the president says he is ready to fight for a second term in office.
