Deputies: 3 Newton Co. children found safe, father arrested

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. - Three Newton County children who were subject of a Levi’s Call, Georgia’s Amber Alert system, were found safe in DeKalb County early Friday morning. 

Investigators said the Amber Alert was issued after their father, 36-year-old Leroy Coleman, got into an argument at the apartment of the children's mother, located in the 200 block of Salem Glen Way. Police said the fight happened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The mother, whose name has not yet been released, was stabbed according to deputies and rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition.  

Investigators said the children, ranging in ages 4 to 12, were then taken by their father. The Levi's Call was issued around 1 a.m. Friday.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office said Coleman was taken into custody after DeKalb County Police received a 911 call. The four had been spotted in the Walmart parking lot at the intersection of Panola Road and Covington Highway. 

Police said when officers arrived they found Coleman and the children, but no vehicle. 

DeKalb County Police took Coleman into custody and transferred him to the Newton County Sheriff's Office. 

Investigators said the kids were taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out.
