Deputy involved in Whitfield County shooting OK, officials say

A man is dead a shootout with deputies in Whitfield County, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Deputies responded to the area of Highway 41 and Westgate Road in Rocky Face just after 11:30 p.m. after the GBI said the sheriff's office received several 911 calls reporting a shooting incident.

Responding deputies found a man armed with a gun and attempted to talk him into putting down his handgun, the GBI said. After several minutes, the man opened fire, the GBI said, forcing the deputies to return fire. 

Deputies then rushed to the man's aid. He was rushed to Hamilton Medical Center where he later died.

No deputies were injured in the shootout.

The GBI Medical; Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy.

The name of the man has not been released.

The GBI will investigate the shooting and will turn over the findings of that investigation to the Whitfield County District Attorney’s Office for review
