Detroit mother arrested in Georgia faces murder charges in death of 9-year-old son

A Detroit mother is still in the process of being extradited from Cobb County back to Michigan to face a murder charge.

Investigators say she ran to metro Atlanta where, once again, she is accused of running afoul of the law with another child.

Death of 9-year-old Zemar King

The backstory:

Last month, authorities discovered the body of Brandee Pierce's son, 9-year-old Zemar King, in a shallow grave at a Detroit home the family rented. Prosecutors believe the child was killed in October by smothering and neck compression. Pierce is charged with her son's murder.

What they're saying:

Brookhaven Police charged Pierce with child cruelty back in December after someone had discovered her 3-year-old son naked in a locked SUV with an air mattress and feces at Northeast Plaza. "The vehicle was not running, the temperature was in the low 40s," said Brookhaven Police Lt. Jake Kissel.

Police reported Pierce eventually emerged from a plasma donation center. "The mother did claim she was between homes and had just moved from out of state and was trying to get back on her feet," said Lt. Kissel.

The child has been taken into the custody of the Department of Family and Children's Services.

After Pierce bonded out of DeKalb County Jail, Cobb County police arrested the 41-year-old at Cumberland Mall on Jan. 10. She's charged with possession of a controlled substance and theft by deception. "We have been in contact with the agencies in Detroit, working with them this week to get the information that we have to share," said Lt. Kissel.
