Tree falls on child during severe Douglasville storm
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. - A Douglasville family is recovering after a tree fell on their home, injuring some family members, during the overnight storms that raged through metro Atlanta. It happened at a home along Fairburn Road.
"4:30 this morning I woke up to a big thud and didn't really know what was happening until I heard my son and my granddaughter screaming for help," Donna Holtz explained.
Donna Holtz is in shock seeing what's left of her home after this power storm. She said a large tree fell where her husband, son, and granddaughter were sleeping.
Her son and granddaughter went to the hospital. Holtz told FOX 5 Atlanta her granddaughter broke her left leg.
"I didn't know it landed on my son until my husband told me. I didn't know my granddaughter was lost outside until my husband told me. She was walking around out here in a stuper," Holtz said.
"She's autistic, so she was really freaking out really bad," she added.
Several crews came out first thing Sunday morning, working to clear downed trees and repair power lines. Power was out for many in the area as soon as the storm moved through.
Neighbors were also out in force on Sunday, helping one another get everything cleaned up.
"I could tell something was going on because my dog got up and came to me," Tyrone Morrow said.
"Douglasville is wide open, and you get this kind of stuff. Just a bad storm," he added.
As cleanup continues, Holtz said she and her family are trying to figure out what is next. She said her house was a total loss.
"It's destroyed. The only thing that was left was my bedroom and the kitchen area. That's it. I don't know what we're going to do. We rent this house. We don't even have insurance," she explained.
