Man killed in fall, woman stabbed and shot in downtown Atlanta's hotel district

A man is dead, and a woman critically injured following a violent incident Friday afternoon near the Hilton Atlanta in the city’s hotel district. Police are investigating this as a brutal assault and suicide.

Officers from the Atlanta Police Department (APD) were dispatched to the Altitude Luxury Apartments located at 250 Piedmont Ave. NE, near John Portman Boulevard, at approximately 2:24 p.m., after receiving several 911 reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man who had fallen from a window of the building and had died. Investigators suggest the fall may have been self-inflicted.

"Reports of a male jumped from the 19th floor to his death and a person shot at the same location," said Atlanta Police Homicide Commander Lt. Andrew Smith.

Investigators raced to the scene and found a man in his 30s dead after jumping out a window. Detectives also found a woman clinging to life after being shot and stabbed at an apartment on the 19th floor. She was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital  in critical condition.

"There was a domestic dispute inside an apartment where a female victim was shot. The male we believe is responsible for the shooting is the male who jumped from the 19th floor," said Atlanta Police Lt. Andrew Smith.

Aerial footage from SKYFOX 5 captured the scene shortly after 4 p.m., showing a line of police cars and emergency vehicles near the Hilton Atlanta, with officers combing the area behind the hotel.

"I just heard the shots and next thing you come out and all the police," said Rashad Leach, a resident.

Rashad Leach says he didn't know the people personally, but he's seen the guy around the building.

"It's just sad. I've been on elevator rides with him, it's just really sad, you never know what people are going through," said Leach.

"I hope she has a full recovery and that she finds a way to heal from this because it sounds like nothing you could ever imagine," said one resident.

Police say as part of their investigation they'll look into whether there's a history of domestic violence calls to the apartment on the 19th floor.

"We actually have a domestic violence team that specifically handles domestic violence and educates victims and citizens. so, the department has made efforts to stop domestic violence, but unfortunately, we're here today with this," said Lt. Smith.

Police have not released the names of anyone involved.

The APD Homicide Unit is investigating the incident.
