Driver speaks about viral encounter with former Gwinnett County police officers

A local man who says he was attacked by two former Gwinnett County police officers during a traffic stop Wednesday faced the media with a bruised face early Saturday.

"[It was] the scariest moment of my life," 21-year-old Demetrius Hollins said. "...The truth would have never came to light without these videos."

Hollins said he is still physically and emotionally traumatized by the ordeal. Two witnesses shot cell phone video of the incident that has since gone viral. The footage shows Gwinnett County officers Robert McDonald and Sgt. Michael Bongiovanni appearing to punch and kick the college student. The Department fired both men.

Now Hollins' attorneys are demanding information on their training and disciplinary histories.

"We want both of these officers criminally charged with assaulting Demetrius and violating his civil rights," Attorney Justin Smith said. "What they did was a crime."

Smith said Hollins had a previous physical encounter with Bongiovanni during a traffic stop last year in the same area. He said his client recognized him at the start of the encounter this week.

Hollins initially faced several charges including driving with a suspended or revoked license, failure to signal, obstruction law enforcement officer and less than an ounce of marijuana. All charges have been dropped.

Prosecutors have dismissed 89 cases where the two officers were principal officers or necessary witnesses, citing credibility concerns.
