An East Point Police officer is hailed a hero.

Sergeant Henry Smith saved a man from a burning car. It happened just after 1 a.m. Tuesday along Washington Road near Arlington Road in East Point.

East Point Police said someone called 911 to report a vehicle fire and that a man was trapped inside.

When Sgt. Smith arrived on the scene, he was able to pull the driver out of the driver’s side window.

After an investigation, police determined the driver went off the road, hit a tree, and the car caught on fire.

The man suffered injuries to his ankles and legs and medics transported him to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police later cited him for failure to maintain lanes.

Monday, the driver and the officer reunited.
