FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. - A distinguished law enforcement career has come to an end in Fayette County. A canine officer who battled cancer for months remained on duty almost to the end.
An end of watch was sounded last week of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office frequencies for K-9 Caine. Caine's remarkable battle with cancer ended last week, three years after he was first diagnosed and given six months to a year to live.
FOX 5 News first told Caine’s story last spring. Caine was diagnosed with cancer in 2013. He continued to work the past three years because Sgt. Chris Robison said that was the best therapy and is probably why he outlived his diagnosis.
And after completing his last week of work, Caine developed health issues which signaled Sgt. Robison that his partner could not answer his next call to duty.
Sgt. Robison said he will continue as a K-9 officer. His SUV is quiet and remains a tribute to his last partner while he awaits his next.
A memorial service is planned for Caine, complete with an honor guard, to recognize his service to the community.
