Exclusive: New Fulton Police Chief Has Big Plans for Future
34 years ago Gary Stiles began his career as an Atlanta beat cop. He climbed his way up the ladder - 30 years as a Fulton County officer - and tomorrow will be sworn in as chief of police.
I asked if it was going to be different at the department? Stiles told me: " I can assure you there are going to be some things that are very different."
Chief Stiles promotion follows a Fox 5 I-Team investigation that showed how former Chief Cassandra Jones worked from home most Monday's and worked a second paid job teaching criminal justice in the middle of the day on Thursdays.
She denied any wrongdoing, then retired shortly after our report aired.
Gary Stiles calls her one of his oldest friends whom he learned from, then says: "I'm not going to start my administration looking in the rearview mirror. Obviously there were some unfortunate things that occurred."
We also reported that former Chief Jones hired county Chaplain Warren Henry, who is a certified police officer, as a detective and he had no supervisor, no daily assignment, and produced no arrest or incident reports.
Stiles said he didn't like what he saw and as interim chief put Chaplain Henry through a 12 week field training, and assigned him to crime prevention, working under a Lieutenant.
Gary Stiles plans to analyze crime trends and beef up Fulton county's community policing, wants technology upgrades to help fight crime, and promises he will be a highly visible leader.
