GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - He had flashing blue lights, and police said he tried to convince a couple of teenagers he was a cop. He's not, and now the real police want to find him.
Gwinnett County Police said the man was driving a dark-colored F-150 extended cab that has blue lights mounted in the dash.
"Blue lights on the dash, like you may see in some of our unmarked vehicles," said Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Wilbert Rundles.
Investigators said on May 9, the man followed two teens from Mill Creek High School down Hog Mountain Road all the way to their house. When the teens pulled into their driveway, the man in the truck blocked them in and walked up to their car.
The teens told police when the guy got out of the truck, he didn't look like a cop.
"He was wearing shorts, a T-shirt, had shaggy hair. It wasn't like what an officer would look like whether he was in a marked or unmarked car," said Cpl. Rundles.
The girls said he was a white man between 20 and 30 years old, about 6 feet tall and heavy set. They said he had a knife on his belt and pretended to have a radio to call for back-up.
"He was talking into his shirt as if he had a radio, but there was no mic or radio," said Cpl Rundles.
The teens refused to roll down their window and called their mom. Police said they did the right thing calling for help.
"If you're ever in an encounter and it turns out the officer was legit and you were calling 911 to confirm that it was a real traffic stop, the officer is going to understand that, it's okay to do that," said Cpl. Rundles.
Police said they don't know if the impersonator has tried to pull over other cars, but they definitely want to catch him before he does it again. Neighbors said they're nervous he's still out there, and are being extra vigilant.
"We tell our kids to watch out for the truck. I'm really glad the girls knew what to do and didn't get hurt," said neighbor Tara Ragland.
