Firefighters responded to a home on Pope Street around 1 a.m. Thursday and crews found the 2-story house with heavy flames shooting out of it.

Rescue workers were able to knock down the flames enough to pull two people from the home, but officials later confirmed the fire had claimed their lives. Officials told FOX 5 the victims are a mother and her adult son.

Both victims found on the home's second floor. The flames on the lower level were so intense that firefighters had to use ladders and go through a window to get to the victims.

Witnesses said they could hear the victims screaming for help, according to fire officials.

The ages and identities of the deceased haven't been released.

Arson investigators were also asked to comb over the fire scene to determine the cause of the blaze, which has yet to be determined.  This is standard practice for deadly fires and firefighters said at least for now, foul play isn't suspected.
