ATLANTA - Former President Jimmy Carter, who has been in hospice care for nearly two years, will not attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump next month, the Carter Center told USA Today.
The 100-year-old former president’s declining health prevents his attendance. Carter, the only living former president willing to consider attending Trump’s second inauguration, previously attended Trump’s first swearing-in ceremony in 2017.
Carter reportedly voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024 election and Trump frequently referenced Carter during his campaign, at one opine saying that Carter was the happiest person anywhere in the country because his administration appeared brilliant compared to President Biden's.
Meanwhile, other former presidents have not confirmed their attendance. The offices of George W. Bush and Barack Obama stated they had no scheduling announcements to share, while representatives for former President Bill Clinton did not respond to inquiries from USA Today.
