“It just irritates me that he is using not only my name, but two or three other peoples' names and victimizing individuals,” said Sheriff Levett.

The sheriff said McCollum called himself “Trey Levett,” and spun stories of his connections to both the sheriff and a well-known family in the local funeral business—neither of which is true.

One woman who was victimized reported that she lost almost $40,000.

“It hurts, it's sad,” said the woman, who did not want to be identified, “no one wants to get scammed.”

Authorities said McCollum promised his victims great deals on government-seized cars and houses. But instead of a good value, investigators said his victims just got the runaround after giving him their money.

“It's unfortunate that someone like him is so talented at fraud and victimizing individuals,” said Sheriff Levett.
