Fulton County DA Fani Willis pushes for jail funding ahead of budget deadline

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has issued a strong message to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners regarding jail conditions.

What we know:

Earlier this week, Willis addressed these conditions during a news conference focused on crime reduction. She has reiterated her request for commissioners to approve increased funding for the Rice Street facility.

During her public remarks, Willis emphasized the importance of public engagement in this issue, stating: "I encourage every citizen of Fulton County to call their commissioners."

The backstory:

Concerns over jail conditions at the Rice Street facility have been ongoing.

In November, the Department of Justice issued a scathing report, citing unconstitutional living conditions, usage of excessive force, and lack of mental health care. Their investigation, launched after the 2022 death of Lashawn Thompson, revealed severe neglect, including unsanitary cells, violence, and inadequate medical treatment, particularly for vulnerable groups like minors and individuals with mental illness.

What you can do:

Willis is encouraging Fulton County citizens to call their commissioners and speak out about the ongoing issues at the jail.

What's next:

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners is set to finalize and pass the county budget on Jan. 22. This decision will determine whether the requested funding for the Rice Street facility is approved.
