GBI: Man injured trying to flee police
FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Investigators said Fulton County officers opened fire on a man who was using his car to try to ram his way out of a parking lot Wednesday.
It happened US Beauty Mart in the 5400 block of Old National Highway around 11 a.m. Officers, responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot, arrived to find a man inside a car. Officers asked the man to get out, but that’s when investigators said he rammed several vehicles including a police cruiser.
Fulton County Police Corporal Maureen Smith told Fox 5, "They attempted to talk to the driver of the vehicle and he was non-compliant. He put his vehicle in reverse and attempted to pin one of our officers between two cars. Shots were fired. He fled the scene and rammed five of our police vehicles."
Officers pursued the man and he was arrested a short time later.
The driver was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital suffering from cuts from broken glass. Investigators said the man was not shot.
No other injuries were reported.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting incident.
"Anytime there is an officer involved shooting the GBI does the investigation and that's why they are on scene at this time," said Smith.
The case will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office once the investigation is complete.
