ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) - There's a plan to replace a bridge on a busy stretch of Briarcliff Road in northeast Atlanta.
The Georgia Department of Transportation released a proposal to replace the near 80-year-old bridge over South Fork Peachtree Creek, which runs roughly between Kay and Carol Lanes.
The plan is to start construction in 2021. It will take two years to complete, and it will cost roughly $6 million, according to officials. There is no plan to shut down the street entirely. In fact, planners say they will reduce it down to one lane, allowing traffic to go through while the construction is underway.
FOX 5 News spoke with drivers Thursday about the plan. They admit the bridge needs to be replaced but they worry the project will worsen traffic in the area which is already congested. The bridge is right around the corner from Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
GDOT is accepting public comments on the proposal through Thursday, May 2. View about the plans of the project by clicking here.
