Georgia GOP electors celebrate as they cast ballots for Trump

Georgia's Republican electors were in high spirits at the state Capitol on Tuesday, as they formally cast ballots for the Republican Party ticket.

Georgia Republican Party Chair Josh McKoon called President-elect Donald Trump's reelection the greatest political comeback in U.S. history.

"He is someone who saw a country profoundly broken, that needed a resurgence that needed to be great again," McKoon said.

The day lacked the political drama that played out under the Gold Dome four years ago, when a group of Republicans gathered for a secret meeting in support of then-President Trump.

Several of those "alternate electors" now face criminal charges after a Fulton County grand jury indicted Trump and 18 co-defendants on conspiracy and racketeering charges.

McKoon defended the group's actions.

"When the history of 2020 is written, the people wearing the black hats are going to be the prosecutors and the judges that allowed this to get wildly out of control, and to try to criminalize what was a legal strategy that had been respected going back as far as 1960 in Hawaii," said McKoon.

Now that they have helped send Trump back to the White House, GOP leaders say they are turning their attention to Georgia's 2026 election.

"We're going to continue our work, and we're not going to, you know, take our foot off the gas," Georgia RNC Committee member Jason Thompson told reporters.
