ATLANTA - Georgia state senators voted along party lines Monday to continue investigating Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over her handling of the 2020 election interference case, reigniting a contentious debate as the new legislative session began.
Republicans, who lead the Senate, argued the investigation remains unfinished, while Democrats criticized it as an unnecessary distraction. The vote followed a heated debate on the Senate floor, with both sides offering sharp critiques.
Sen. Greg Dolezal, a Republican from Cumming, defended the timing of the decision, citing procedural continuity. "We wanted continuity between the last session and the session," Dolezal said. "As you know, we were delayed through a massive chunk of last year due to a court fight."
Democrats, however, blasted the move as a politically motivated overreach. "We have no business trying to micromanage [a] prosecutor’s office," said Sen. Harold Jones II, a Democrat from Augusta. "If Fulton County has an issue with what was taken place, they need to address that. That’s their purview to do that. That’s not the purview of the General Assembly. It never has been and is a complete waste of time."
The renewed focus on Willis comes after a Fulton County Superior Court judge ordered her to respond by Monday to a subpoena requiring her testimony before the state Senate committee. The order stems from ongoing legal and political battles over her investigation into efforts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results.
Republican leaders have maintained that the inquiry is necessary to ensure accountability, while Democrats argue it undermines prosecutorial independence and distracts from more pressing legislative priorities.
