Storm rips through Floyd County leaving damage in its wake

Floyd County also saw widespread damage after severe storms passed through the area on Friday.

Severe thunderstorms and gusty winds left behind a trail of damage across north Georgia on Friday.

The FOX 5 Storm Team had been tracking the severe weather that prompted several tornado warnings through the afternoon, but no touchdowns have been confirmed.

The FAA says there was a ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport due to the thunderstorms from about 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. This impacted all flights heading to and flying out of Atlanta. The FAA reported delays of up to an hour for some flights.

At the height of the power outages, more than 75,000 customers across the state were impacted, according to Georgia Power and the Georgia EMCs.

Some trees and power lines have been reported downed and there are some reports of trees falling, damaging some buildings.

Officials say they spent the afternoon clearing trees from roadways and public areas.

Cleanup begins after severe storms in Floyd County

Officials in Floyd County are cleaning up after a severe storm tore through the area on Friday.

One of the hardest hit areas in northwest Georgia appear to be on the campus of Berry College.

Several trees were seen downed after severe storms moved through the area Friday afternoon.

There were no reports of injuries.

The private liberal arts college is known for its campus being on 27,000 acres, about 60 percent which is overseen by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. It is not uncommon to see deer among the forested surroundings and the campus maintains an eagle cam on at least one known nest.

Elsewhere in Floyd County, numerous reports of trees and power lines down flooded into the 911 call center.

A Shorter University, one building had a tree fall on it. Crews worked quickly to remove it.

One young lady shared video of trees that knocked power lines down in her yard. She described the incident.

"I went to the basement because it was like windy and rainy and right, a minute or two after we went to the basement, i saw like a tree fall and like the lines come down and they're like touching our cars," she said.

Storm leaves behind damage in Rome

Cleanup has begun in Floyd County after a severe storm ripped its way through the community on Friday.

Traffic lights along Highway 53 were also out and there were reports of power outages across the county.

"Got a notification from my neighbor here that the barn was gone so it really concerned me," said Chris Ozmet.

Ozmet said a barn collapsed along Avery Road 

"I guess a gust of wind lifted the roof off and it was gone," Ozmet said.

No injuries have been reported.

"Everything that is important to us is still here no one got hurt," Ozmet said.

Ozmet described the moments the storm passed through.

"It was windy it got dark a lot of rain really fast. Scary for a few minutes," he said.

Another report indicates a pole snapped across Redmond Road.

Georgia Power crews were seen around the area working to restore power.

If ever there was a weekend that was worth of a sunny weather, this weekend would be it. Here's how nice it will be as well as a sneak preview of the weather to start next week.

The winds are expected to die down by Saturday morning.

Temperatures will warm up into the 70s by the afternoon.

This weekend will be a little cooler, but still above the average. Highs in the mid- to upper- 60s.

Expect a warm-up through at least Tuesday.
