DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A teenager has been arrested after a standoff with a SWAT team in DeKalb County.
DeKalb County Police said the 15-year-old gunman barricade himself inside a home after he was confronted by a father and son who live in a home on Appleton Court. The father and son were able to get away safely. The gunman then ran into the house and refused to leave. Police said the gunman tried to slip out of a basement window, but the SWAT team has the whole house surrounded.
Cecelia Jackson hid in a bathroom, quietly talking to her husband on a cell phone.
"I don't think he knew I was in the house. When I saw him, he was following my husband and my son around the house with a shotgun so I ran into the bathroom and locked the door," Mrs. Jackson said Monday.
After a four-hour standoff, the teen walked out of the house in police custody facing kidnapping and aggravated assault charges. Because of his age, police will not release the suspect's name. No one was injured. His parents told FOX 5's Portia Bruner he is a troubled teen who's been in and out of the juvenile justice system for quite some time.
"We walked him out because we didn't want him to hurt nobody and we didn't want him to get hurt. He's been going through a lot and hasn't been quite right since his brother committed suicide last month. We apologize for the trouble he's caused and we hope people will forgive him," said the man who identified himself as Cedric and identified himself as the teen’s father.
Walter Jackson, Jr. said the young man held his father and son at gunpoint and threatened to take them to an ATM to withdraw cash. Walter Jackson, Sr. and his other son escaped as police arrived.
"It's just so sad that he is so young. It breaks my heart. They do these types of things and then just get out again and repeat them again. I'm just glad no one was hurt," Jackson said shortly after his father, mother and younger brother were reunited.
