Fatal crash on I-85 South July 14, 2024

At least one person has died in a serious crash on I-85 South between I-985 and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. At least two cars were involved. Traffic was at a near standstill for hours.

Gwinnett County police have confirmed a major crash on I-85 South Sunday afternoon was fatal.

At least three people and two cars were involved in the crash on the interstate between the I-985 merge and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. It was not immediately clear how many of the victims also died. Gwinnett County police said they would be releasing the severity of the injuries.

FOX 5 spoke to Otha Rucker Jr. who lives just down the street from where the crash happened. He said he knew something bad happened when his friends didn't show up for his barbecue.

They told him they were stuck in traffic.

When he came down to see the crash for himself, he said he was shaken to see just how badly one of the vehicles was damaged.

"The ceiling is on the tires. The ceiling is where the tires are supposed to be. Whoever was in that car, it’s over with," he said. "And if you go to see it, you’ll see the blood on the windshield and things like that, the Louis Vuitton purse, it looked like they were coming from a trip."

The roadway reopened just before 6 p.m.

FOX 5 Atlanta is working to learn more about the deadly crash and the victims.
