Gwinnett County family wants justice after daughter's death

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A Gwinnett County woman critically injured in a car accident more than a year ago has passed last month, but her family said they are not yet done fighting for her.

Taylor Hamm, 26, was struck by a car while walking on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road shortly before 7 a.m. Christmas Day 2016. Police said the driver who hit Hamm did not stop and did not call 911 until she got to work. No charges have been filed in the case.

Her father, Jeff Hamm, said they are disheartened by his daughter’s death, but without charges, there doesn’t seem to be closure. He said he is well aware that charges will not bring his daughter back to him, but it would bring him a sense of justice in it all.

The 26-year-old woman passed away on March 27. She had been in a coma for 15 months. Her father said they were hopeful for a miracle but just happy with the extra time they had with her.

Investigators said the driver, who was 8 months pregnant at the time, did not stop and continued two miles to her job at Gwinnett Medical Center where she called for help. Police said the driver told them she was afraid to stop on the dark road.

Jeff Hamm said he just doesn’t understand how driving those two miles before reporting the accident cannot be considered a hit and run. He said he is shocked by the lack of charges.
