Hostage SWAT standoff resolved: 4 rescued, gunman dies

A dispute between roommates erupts in gunfire. SWAT officers responded to a hostage situation at that residence on Bridgewater Branch near Stone Mountain Wednesday morning. DeKalb County police say the suspect opened fire in the residence and threatened to shoot anyone that attempted to leave.

Police officers and the SWAT team surrounded a Redan-area home on Thursday morning after reports of shots being fired inside.

Officers were dispatched around 9 a.m. to a home located at 1401 Bridgewater Branch after reports of a person firing a weapon, according to the DeKalb County Police Department.

Police quickly learned four people were inside, being told by a gunman he would shoot them if they left. The SWAT team was brought in to try to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Eventually, SWAT entered the home, leading the four people outside to safety.

As officers continued to search the home, they found the gunman on the ground, unresponsive. Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

His cause of death was not immediately known.

Investigators say the initially shots being fired happened during a landlord-tenant dispute inside the home.

The investigation into the incident continues.
