Police search for 'armed and dangerous' murder suspect

A DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after a suspect opens fire at him. The gunman responsible is still on the loose.

An "armed and dangerous" man wanted for murder shot at a DeKalb County deputy at a Stone Mountain area apartment complex on Friday afternoon.

DeKalb County police say a deputy were attempting to track Demetrius Nicholas, so he could be taken into custody on a murder warrant, when he fired at them.

It happened around 3 p.m. at the East Ponce Village apartments near the intersection of Juliette Road and Wood Bend Drive.

SKYFOX 5 flew over the scene around 4 p.m. and saw police surrounding that apartment complex. Officers were searching the area behind along Rock Mountain Boulevard.

Just before 7:30 p.m., law enforcement officials told FOX 5 News that after a thorough search of the area, Nicholas has not been located. Operations in the area appear to be winding down as the investigation and search enters a new phase.

Murder suspected wanted for shooting at DeKalb County deputy

DeKalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox says the deputy was not actively searching for Nichols, but was spotted by him.

"We had the identity on the suspect," the sheriff said. "One of the deputies just happened to spot the individual who was wanted for murder."

The deputy then called in the situation.

"And the suspect saw, of course, that he was being tailed and began to fire at the deputy," the sheriff said.

It was immediately clear if the deputy returned fire.
