Heavy Rains Lead to Flooding In Rome

The Coosa River in Rome continues to rise following days of heavy rains.

Several streets have been closed by flood waters. Many other spots, particularly low-lying areas and some city parks are completely under water.

Emergency management officials said they are monitoring the situation and expect the river to crest sometime late Saturday night.

Officials have closed several streets and also put up high water signs.

They have asked drivers to be aware of the road closures and to not drive through any streets that are covered with water. They have warned residents that it doesn't take much water to carry a car away and put those inside in danger.

A floodgate was also closed on North 2nd Avenue in Rome to keep the floodwaters at bay. However, water began leaking through those gates, forcing workers to put up sandbags to stop the flow.

Officials told FOX 5 they hope the next several days will be free of rain, thus giving the water time to recede.
