16-year-old shot, killed by Henry County police officer
HENRY COUNTY, Ga. - A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by a Henry County police officer Tuesday evening after investigators say he ran from the officer while carrying a handgun.
What we know:
The shooting happened around 6:33 p.m. Nov. 3 near a Krispy Kreme at 120 Highway 138 West in Stockbridge, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI said a Henry County police officer spotted two teenagers, ages 16 and 17, in the restaurant's parking lot and approached them.
After speaking briefly with the teens, the officer ordered the 17-year-old to remove his hands from his pockets.
According to investigators, the 17-year-old then handed a handgun to the 16-year-old, who ran from the area carrying the weapon.
The officer chased the younger teen on foot and repeatedly ordered him to drop the gun, the GBI said.
Investigators said the 16-year-old did not comply with those commands, and the officer fired, striking him.
Medical aid was provided at the scene, but the teenager died from his injuries.
Authorities recovered a handgun at the scene.
No officers were injured during the incident.
What we don't know:
The GBI has not released the name of the teenager who was killed or identified the officer involved in the shooting.
Investigators have not explained what initially prompted the officer to approach the two teenagers or whether either teen was suspected of a crime before the encounter.
Authorities also have not said whether the 16-year-old pointed or raised the handgun toward the officer, how many shots were fired or what happened to the 17-year-old following the shooting.
