Crew working to fix hole in road

A crew is working to repair the hole that opened up in the NB lanes of Buford Highway on Wednesday morning.

Buford Highway between Briarwood Road and Afton Lane in Brookhaven has reopened after crews spent all of Wednesday repairing a giant sinkhole which opened up in the northbound lanes earlier in the day.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, a construction crew were working in the area on Tuesday and hit a water main.

"We have a contractor working on an active project. Now, the projects is a sidewalk upgrade, pedestrian streetscape project that we are working on with the city of Brookhaven, but it is a GDOT project. And the contractor hit the may water line late yesterday," said GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale.

That resulted in water collecting underneath the roadway. On Wednesday morning, a large vehicle drove over the area and the sinkhole opened.

"It wasn't until earlier this morning that because of the water that settled under the road, a large vehicle, I'm not sure it's a bus or truck, hit that area of pavement causing the collapse," Dale said.

The road was closed for about 15 hours.

It reopened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
