COVINGTON, Ga. - On January 2nd, the Covington Police Department was notified by the GBI that remains found on City Pond Road have been positively identified as wanted David Sheffield through dental records.
Covington Police said human skeletal remains were found in a wooded area off City Pond Road at around one Monday afternoon. Captain Craig Treadwell said a surveyor stumbled across the remains.
"Initially the surveyors came across a skull and from there our detectives came to the scene and started a search, a line search," said Captain. Treadwell. "When they did a line search they located other body parts or bones."
Sheffield lived in Aiken, South Carolina where federal charges were issued by the FBI. The FBI had been looking for Sheffield on child porn and child molestation charges. Agents said Sheffield was last seen publicly in 2010 when he was caught on an ATM surveillance camera in Aiken.

Investigators said they recovered boots and a shirt from the area. They believe the remains have been there anywhere from months to years.
Covington Police said they found Sheffield’s car in 2011.
Investigators said they will test DNA samples to determine if it is Sheffield's body.
