Interstate 85 reopens in South Carolina after bomb threat; tractor trailer driver arrested

Interstate 85 in Greenville, South Carolina has reopened in both directions after being shut down for more than four hours. 

Ahmad Jamal Khamees Alhendi, 28, was arrested on charges of breach of peace: high/aggravated nature, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, on his X account, confirmed the incident was sparked by a bomb threat "I-85 near mile marker 44 is temporarily closed out of an abundance of caution due to a bomb threat issued during a routine traffic stop this afternoon  by the SC Transport Police," the governor wrote. SCDOT and state law enforcement are on the scene, and normal I-85 traffic will resume once the tractor trailer is swept and cleared by SLED's bomb squad.

According to the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, the driver of the tractor trailer was taken into custody.

The SWAT and bomb teams responded to I-85 at U.S. 25, the White Horse Road exit around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident completely shut down the highway in both directions.

The name of the driver was not released.

Officials say they have deemed the situation to be safe, but did not comment if anything was found.
