Remembering Jimmy Carter: Mourners bring peanuts, flowers, heartfelt letters to The Carter Center
ATLANTA - As the sunset at the Carter Center Monday, people continued to leave flowers and notes, and one person even left peanuts for the peanut farmer from Plains who became president of the United States. Everyone had their own special memory about former President Jimmy Carter.

"He was always working, always trying to make the world a better place," said Maureen Wilce.
Mourners continued to gather at The Carter Center a day after former President Jimmy Carter died. They brought tributes like flowers, candles and even peanuts, to honor him.
Maureen Wilce was an intern at The Carter Center and recalls running into him every now and then.
"He even held the door for me. I mean, what a gracious man," said Wilce.

Gwen Durant and her family stopped by the Carter Center to pay their respects. Durant remembers voting for President Carter.

"It was just a wonderful time. We had something to look forward to, and he seemed to represent all people. He was just bringing everybody together," said Durant.
Others remember his life after he left office, saying he led a life of compassion and service.
"He was an amazing president," said Jay Patel.

Elisabeth Omilami, the daughter of Rev. Hosea Williams, remembers her dad and former President Carter's meaningful discussions about ways to help others.
"They had spirited conversations, but one thing they agreed on is it's our responsibility to serve the needy. President Carter took that to an international level," said Omilami.

Omilami calls former President Carter a man of the people, and says it wouldn't hurt if we were all a little more like him.
"Look at his life, look at how he lived his life and pattern yourself after that, because no matter whether you're a politician, teacher, preacher, that piece of his life needs to live on forever," said Omilami.

The public can share condolences on Jimmy Carter's official tribute website. The site has an online condolence book as well as print and visual biographical materials commemorating his life.
The Carter family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Carter Center, 453 John Lewis Freedom Parkway N.E., Atlanta, GA 30307.
