An Alpharetta police K-9 is recovering from emergency surgery after suffering serious injuries during a police chase.

The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety shared a picture of "Mattis" on Facebook early Monday morning. The dog is still recovering, but he's expected to make a full recovery.

Officials said the K-9 suffered a lacerated liver, heavy internal bleeding and other issues during a police pursuit.

Mattis was chasing a suspect who bailed from a vehicle during a police chase. The suspect left the scene on foot and unknowingly leaped over a 30 foot wall, attempting to escape. Mattis followed the suspect and went over the wall.

Officials said two suspects were taken into custody and dozens of stolen cell phones, credit cards and identifications were recovered.

The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said on Facebook Saturday night Mattis was listed in stable condition, and they thanked the community for their support.

“Thanks in part to your kindness and prayers he is expected to make a full recovery and return to serving his community. He has a long road ahead but he will be fine.”
