The College Football Playoff National Championship ended in heartbreak for the University of Georgia after a 26-23 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, but UGA head coach Kirby Smart has a message for Bulldog nation.
“I think everyone can see Georgia is gonna be a force to be reckoned with,” Coach Smart said in a news conference following the game. “I am very proud of this team and this university, and we’re not going anywhere.”
The Dawgs lost after a game-winning touchdown pass in overtime, giving ‘Bama its 17th national championship in college football and fifth since 2009.
It was a devastating defeat for Georgia fans, but Coach Smart said he couldn't be prouder of his players, especially the seniors.
“I can’t say enough about the remarkable senior class,” Coach Smart said as he sat next to Sony Michel and Nick Chubb, both senior running backs.
“These two young men sitting next to me meant more to Georgia than yards. A lot of heart and soul, a lot of fire.”
Smart said Michel inspired his teammates and motivated his teammates several times during Monday night's game.
“The standard's been set by these young men right here. I can't put into words what these seniors mean,” Smart said. “This guy over here next to me, 27 [Chubb] comes by me and says, ‘I will go anywhere for you and I will follow you anywhere and fight for you because I believe in you.’ That means more to me than anything.”
