Last Ride Planned for K9 Injured in 2011 Car Wreck

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - A community will come together on Tuesday to honor and say goodbye to a dedicated member of the Clayton County Police Department: K9 Lakota.

Lakota medically retired from the line of duty in October of 2011. He served alongside Officer Travis Fox with the Clayton County Police Department for 4 years and in that short time he was the most successful K9 the county ever had.

Lakota had more than 80 apprehensions, 28 drugs seizures with $60,000 seized and recovered stolen property during tracks after burglaries.

On October 13, 2011, the dog ended his career after a car wreck. He was with Officer Fox headed to a home invasion call when they crashed. The accident split the car into two pieces and ejected both of them from the vehicle.

Lakota wasn’t expected to survive, but fought through it. He had four surgeries and has been living out his retirement with Officer Fox ever since.

Tuesday, the public is invited to say goodbye to Lakota.  A “last ride” and escort will take place at 2:00 p.m. Officers will arrive at Southern Crescent Animal in Fayetteville and accompany Lakota to Wheeler Funeral Home & Crematory, which is located at 11405 Brown Bridge Road in Covington. The last ride will go through the square in McDonough, then on Highway 81 towards Porterdale.
