Legendary trio Honey Cone 'rains' with new single
"Wanted: young man, single and free."
With those six words, singing trio Honey Cone set the music charts on fire. Now, more than 50 years later, the group is ready to "sweeten" up the airwaves again.
The legendary soul group just released its first single in roughly 50 years, a cover of the Eurythmics hit "Here Comes the Rain Again." The group’s current lineup includes Kathy Merrick, Wendy Smith-Bruné, and founding member Shelly Clark.
Honey Cone (originally featuring Clark, Edna Wright, and Carolyn Willis) first soared to stardom with the single "Want Ads," which shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1971. The song also topped the Billboard R&B chart, as did the follow-up, "Stick-Up" — and further hits included "One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show" and "The Day I Found Myself."
2025 is set to be a busy year for Clark and Honey Cone. Along with releasing "Here Comes the Rain Again," Clark just produced the single "Superman" for her husband, legendary Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White. Honey Cone sings background on the single, which was recorded in tribute to White’s late brother (and Earth, Wind & Fire founder) Maurice White.
