LIST: Deadly school shootings since 1999 in the U.S.

The deadliest school shooting in the United States as of June 21, 2024, was the Virginia Tech massacre. Thirty-two people were killed and 23 people were injured in that shooting. The next deadliest school shooting (based on fatalities) was the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, with 27 fatalities. There have been 416 school shootings since Columbine, according to The Washington Post

1999

  • January 8, 1999 - Carrollton, Georgia, 2 dead, 0 injured. A 15-year-old girl, Andrea Garrett, was found dead and 17-year-old Jeff Miller seriously wounded in the girls' restroom at Central High School as part of a suspected suicide pact. Miller died the next day.
  • April 20, 1999 - Littleton, Colorado, 15 dead, 24 injured. Columbine High School massacre: 18-year-old Eric Harris and 17-year-old Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and one teacher, injured 21 others, and committed suicide. It remained the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history until 2018.
  • November 19, 1999 - Deming, New Mexico, 1 dead, 0 injured. 13-year-old Victor Cordova Jr. fatally shot a classmate, Araceli Tena, at Deming Middle School. Cordova claimed the shooting was accidental as he intended to commit suicide.

2000

  • February 29, 2000 – Flint, Michigan, 1 dead, 0 injured. At Buell Elementary School, a 6-year-old boy fatally shot 6-year-old classmate Kayla Rolland. This remains the youngest documented fatal school shooting in U.S. history.
  • May 26, 2000 – Lake Worth, Florida, 1 dead, 0 injured. Nathaniel Brazill, a 13-year-old student, fatally shot teacher Barry Grunow at Lake Worth Middle School after being sent home earlier that day for misbehavior.
  • June 28, 2000 – Seattle, Washington, 2 dead, 0 injured. A Taiwanese immigrant and former pathology resident shot and killed Rodger C. Haggitt at the University of Washington Medical Center before committing suicide.
  • August 28, 2000 – Fayetteville, Arkansas, 2 dead, 0 injured. A University of Arkansas PhD candidate, James Easton Kelly, fatally shot English professor John R. Locke and then committed suicide after being dismissed from the program.

2001

  • March 5, 2001 – Santee, California, 2 dead, 13 injured. 15-year-old Charles Andrew Williams opened fire at Santana High School, killing two students and injuring 13 others. He was later sentenced to life in prison with a chance of parole after 50 years.
  • March 30, 2001 – Gary, Indiana, 1 dead, 0 injured. Donald Ray Burt Jr., 17, fatally shot fellow student Neal Boyd IV outside Lew Wallace High School. Burt was sentenced to 57 years in prison.
  • May 16, 2001 – Parkland, Washington, 2 dead, 0 injured. A 55-year-old man shot and killed Pacific Lutheran University music instructor James D. Holloway before committing suicide. The attack appeared to be random.

2002

  • January 16, 2002 - Grundy, Virginia, 3 dead, 3 injured. A recently dismissed graduate student killed three people and injured three others at the Appalachian School of Law.
  • February 20, 2002 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1 dead, 0 injured. A high school student was killed after a basketball game in a parking lot at Washington High School.
  • October 28, 2002 - Tucson, Arizona, 4 dead, 0 injured. A former nursing student killed three professors at the University of Arizona and then committed suicide.

2003

  • April 14, 2003 - New Orleans, Louisiana, 1 dead, 3 injured. Two teens opened fire at John McDonogh High School, killing one student and injuring three others.
  • April 24, 2003 - Red Lion, Pennsylvania, 2 dead, 0 injured. A 14-year-old student killed the principal at Red Lion Area Junior High School before committing suicide.
  • May 9, 2003 - Cleveland, Ohio, 1 dead, 3 injured. A Case Western Reserve University alumnus killed a graduate student and injured others during a seven-hour standoff.
  • September 24, 2003 - Cold Spring, Minnesota, 2 dead, 0 injured. A student at Rocori High School fatally shot two classmates.

2004

  • February 2, 2004 - Washington, D.C., 1 dead, 1 injured. A student was killed, and another was grazed by gunfire at Ballou High School.
  • February 9, 2004 - East Greenbush, New York, 0 dead, 1 injured. A student shot a teacher at Columbia High School before being subdued.

2005

  • March 2, 2005 - Dover, Tennessee, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 14-year-old student killed his bus driver, Joyce Gregory.
  • March 21, 2005 - Red Lake, Minnesota, 10 dead, 7 injured. A student killed nine people at Red Lake Senior High School before committing suicide.
  • July 18, 2005 - Newark, New Jersey, 1 dead, 2 injured. An officer was shot and killed after breaking up a fight at Weequahic High School.
  • November 8, 2005 - Jacksboro, Tennessee, 1 dead, 2 injured. A student killed a principal and wounded two assistant principals at Campbell County High School.

2006

  • February 9, 2006 - Tampa, Florida, 1 dead, 0 injured. A former University of South Florida employee was shot and killed.
  • August 24, 2006 - Essex Junction, Vermont, 2 dead, 3 injured. A man shot his girlfriend's mother and others at Essex Elementary School.
  • August 30, 2006 - Hillsborough, North Carolina, 1 dead, 2 injured. A student killed his father, then opened fire at his former high school.
  • September 2, 2006 - Shepherdstown, West Virginia, 3 dead, 0 injured. A man killed his two sons and himself at Shepherd University.
  • September 27, 2006 - Bailey, Colorado, 2 dead, 0 injured. A man took hostages at Platte Canyon High School, killing one student before taking his own life.
  • September 29, 2006 - Cazenovia, Wisconsin, 1 dead, 0 injured. A student killed the principal at Weston High School.
  • October 2, 2006 - Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, 6 dead, 5 injured. A gunman killed five girls and injured five others at an Amish school.

2007

  • January 3, 2007 - Tacoma, Washington, 1 dead, 0 injured. An 18-year-old student shot and killed a classmate at Henry Foss High School.
  • January 4, 2007 - Detroit, Michigan, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 14-year-old girl was shot in the leg outside Northwestern High School by two men in a car.
  • March 6, 2007 - Midland, Michigan, 1 dead, 1 injured. A 17-year-old shot his ex-girlfriend in the school parking lot before committing suicide.
  • April 16, 2007 - Blacksburg, Virginia, 33 dead, 23 injured. The Virginia Tech shooting: A student opened fire on campus, killing 32 people before committing suicide.
  • August 4, 2007 - Newark, New Jersey, 3 dead, 1 injured. Three college students were killed execution-style in a schoolyard.
  • September 21, 2007 - Dover, Delaware, 1 dead, 1 injured. Two freshmen were shot at Delaware State University, one of whom later died from injuries.
  • October 10, 2007 - Cleveland, Ohio, 1 dead, 5 injured. A student opened fire at SuccessTech Academy before taking his own life.

2008

  • February 8, 2008 - Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 3 dead, 0 injured. A nursing student shot two classmates before taking her own life at Louisiana Technical College.
  • February 12, 2008 - Oxnard, California, 1 dead, 0 injured. A student was shot and killed in a classroom at E.O. Green Junior High School.
  • February 14, 2008 - DeKalb, Illinois, 6 dead, 21 injured. A former student opened fire at Northern Illinois University, killing five people before committing suicide.
  • August 14, 2008 - Federal Way, Washington, 1 dead, 0 injured. A man was shot in the head in a gang-related incident at Lakota Middle School.
  • August 21, 2008 - Knoxville, Tennessee, 1 dead, 0 injured. A student was shot and killed by a classmate at Central High School.
  • October 13, 2008 - Universal City, Texas, 1 dead, 0 injured. A librarian shot and killed a co-worker at Northeast Lakeview College.
  • October 16, 2008 - Detroit, Michigan, 1 dead, 3 injured. A student was killed, and three others were injured in a drive-by shooting near Henry Ford High School.
  • October 26, 2008 - Conway, Arkansas, 2 dead, 1 injured. Two students were shot and killed at the University of Central Arkansas.
  • November 12, 2008 - Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 1 dead, 0 injured. A student was shot and killed by a classmate at Dillard High School.

2009

  • May 18, 2009 - Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1 dead, 0 injured. A man was shot and killed in a Harvard College dormitory during an attempted robbery. Three men were later convicted in connection with the shooting.
  • May 18, 2009 - Larose, Louisiana, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 15-year-old student at Larose-Cut Off Middle School attempted to shoot a teacher, but his gun malfunctioned. He later shot himself and died of his injuries.
  • June 24, 2009 - Parkersburg, Iowa, 1 dead, 0 injured. Coach Edward Arthur Thomas was shot and killed in the weight room of Aplington-Parkersburg High School by a former student and football player.
  • October 16, 2009 - San Bruno, California, 1 dead, 1 injured. A 16-year-old male student lunged at a school resource officer with a knife at Carolina Forest High School. The officer fatally shot the student.

2010

  • February 5, 2010 - Madison, Alabama, 1 dead, 0 injured. 14-year-old Hammad Memon killed fellow student Todd Brown, 14, at Discovery Middle School. Memon was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
  • February 12, 2010 - Huntsville, Alabama, 3 dead, 3 injured. During a faculty meeting, biology professor Amy Bishop opened fire, killing three and injuring three others at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Bishop was arrested and charged with murder.
  • February 26, 2010 - Tacoma, Washington, 2 dead, 0 injured. A teacher was shot and killed by a stalker at Birney Elementary School. The shooter was killed by police in a shootout.
  • September 28, 2010 - Austin, Texas, 1 dead, 0 injured. A University of Texas student opened fire on campus before killing himself in the university library.
  • October 1, 2010 - Salinas, California, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 15-year-old student was killed in a gang-related shooting on an athletic field at Alisal High School.
  • October 8, 2010 - Carlsbad, California, 0 dead, 2 injured. Two second-grade students were grazed by bullets when a man opened fire at Kelly Elementary School. The shooter was sentenced to 189 years in prison.
  • October 23, 2010 - Topeka, Kansas, 1 dead, 1 injured. A drug deal gone wrong led to a fatal shooting near Topeka West High School. Four suspects were arrested.
  • November 29, 2010 - Marinette, Wisconsin, 1 dead, 0 injured. A student took 23 students and a teacher hostage at Marinette High School before fatally shooting himself.

2011

  • January 5, 2011 - Omaha, Nebraska, 2 dead, 2 injured. A student killed an assistant principal and injured others at Millard South High School before killing himself.
  • March 31, 2011 - Houston, Texas, 1 dead, 5 injured. A former student was killed, and five others injured during a shooting at a high school football game.
  • May 10, 2011 - San Jose, California, 3 dead, 0 injured. A man shot and killed two students, including his estranged wife, in a San Jose State University parking garage before killing himself.
  • September 28, 2011 - Jurupa Valley, California, 2 dead, 0 injured. A man fatally shot his wife, a teacher's aide, in a school parking lot before committing suicide.
  • December 8, 2011 - Blacksburg, Virginia, 2 dead, 0 injured. A man shot and killed a police officer at Virginia Tech before committing suicide.

2012

  • February 27, 2012 - Chardon, Ohio, 3 dead, 3 injured. A 17-year-old student opened fire at Chardon High School, killing three students and wounding three others.
  • March 6, 2012 - Jacksonville, Florida, 2 dead, 0 injured. A fired teacher shot and killed the headmistress at Episcopal High School before committing suicide.
  • April 2, 2012 - Oakland, California, 7 dead, 3 injured. A shooter killed seven people and wounded three others at Oikos University.
  • October 19, 2012 - Chicago, Illinois, 1 dead, 0 injured. An 18-year-old student was killed during an attempted robbery outside Banner Academy South.
  • December 14, 2012 - Newtown, Connecticut, 28 dead, 2 injured. A shooter killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School before taking his own life.

2013

  • January 15, 2013 - Hazard, Kentucky, 3 dead, 0 injured. Three people were shot in the parking lot of Hazard Community and Technical College.
  • January 16, 2013 - Chicago, Illinois, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 17-year-old student was killed after a high school basketball game at Chicago State University.
  • February 1, 2013 - Detroit, Michigan, 1 dead, 1 injured. A 16-year-old was killed in a robbery attempt at Martin Luther King High School.
  • March 18, 2013 - Orlando, Florida, 1 dead, 0 injured. A student committed suicide after pulling a fire alarm at the University of Central Florida.
  • June 7, 2013 - Santa Monica, California, 6 dead, 4 injured. A gunman went on a killing spree, starting at his home and ending at Santa Monica College.
  • August 23, 2013 - Sardis, Mississippi, 1 dead, 2 injured. A 15-year-old student was killed during a gang-related shooting at North Panola High School.
  • October 21, 2013 - Sparks, Nevada, 2 dead, 2 injured. A student shot a teacher and another student before committing suicide at Sparks Middle School.
  • December 13, 2013 - Centennial, Colorado, 2 dead, 0 injured. A student shot a fellow student at Arapahoe High School before taking his own life.

2014

  • January 21, 2014 – West Lafayette, Indiana, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 21-year-old student, Andrew Boldt, was killed in a classroom at Purdue University by a fellow student, Cody Cousins, who was later sentenced to 65 years in prison before committing suicide in jail.
  • January 24, 2014 – Orangeburg, South Carolina, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 20-year-old student was shot and killed at South Carolina State University. A 19-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder.
  • January 25, 2014 – Los Angeles, California, 1 dead, 0 injured. A man was killed at Los Angeles Valley College. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting.
  • April 11, 2014 – Detroit, Michigan, 1 dead, 0 injured. Four men opened fire in the parking lot of East English Village Preparatory Academy after a student awards ceremony, killing 19-year-old Darryl Smith, who was not a student at the academy.
  • June 5, 2014 – Seattle, Washington, 1 dead, 2 injured. A gunman opened fire in a hallway of Otto Miller Hall at Seattle Pacific University, killing one student and injuring two others before being subdued.
  • June 10, 2014 – Troutdale, Oregon, 2 dead, 1 injured. A 15-year-old student shot and killed a freshman at Reynolds High School and injured a teacher before committing suicide.
  • October 3, 2014 – Fairburn, Georgia, 1 dead, 0 injured. After a homecoming football game, 17-year-old Kristofer Hunter was shot and killed in the parking lot of Langston Hughes High School.
  • October 24, 2014 – Marysville, Washington, 5 dead, 3 injured. A 15-year-old freshman shot and killed four students at Marysville Pilchuck High School before committing suicide in the school cafeteria.
  • November 20, 2014 – Tallahassee, Florida, 1 dead, 3 injured. A gunman opened fire at Strozier Library at Florida State University, injuring three people before being fatally shot by police.
  • November 20, 2014 – Miami, Florida, 1 dead, 1 injured. Two teens were shot during a fight at Miami Carol City High School, one of whom died.

2015

  • February 14, 2015 - Merced, California, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 16-year-old was found dead in the parking lot of Tenaya Middle School after a shooting.
  • April 13, 2015 - Goldsboro, North Carolina, 1 dead, 0 injured. A faculty member was killed in the library at Wayne Community College by a gunman who was later arrested.
  • May 14, 2015 - Vallejo, California, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 17-year-old student was killed in a robbery near Jesse M. Bethel High School.
  • August 27, 2015 - Savannah, Georgia, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 22-year-old student was fatally shot at Savannah State University.
  • September 3, 2015 - Sacramento, California, 1 dead, 2 injured. A student was shot and killed in a parking lot at Sacramento City College.
  • September 14, 2015 - Cleveland, Mississippi, 3 dead, 0 injured. A man killed a woman, an American history professor, and later himself in a shooting spree.
  • October 1, 2015 - Roseburg, Oregon, 10 dead, 9 injured. The Umpqua Community College shooting left 10 dead, including the gunman, and nine others injured.
  • October 9, 2015 - Flagstaff, Arizona, 1 dead, 3 injured. A student was shot and killed at Northern Arizona University, and three others were wounded.
  • October 9, 2015 - Houston, Texas, 1 dead, 1 injured. One person was killed, and another was wounded in a shooting outside a Texas Southern University dorm.
  • October 22, 2015 - Nashville, Tennessee, 1 dead, 3 injured. A person was killed during a shooting at Tennessee State University.
  • November 1, 2015 - Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 1 dead, 1 injured. A person was killed in a shooting at Winston-Salem State University.
  • November 20, 2015 - North Las Vegas, Nevada, 1 dead, 0 injured. A student was fatally shot during a fight at Mojave High School.

2016

  • February 12, 2016 – Glendale, Arizona, 2 dead, 0 injured. Two 15-year-old girls died in an apparent murder-suicide at Independence High School.
  • April 23, 2016 – Antigo, Wisconsin, 1 dead, 2 injured. A former student shot and injured two students at Antigo High School prom before being shot by police. The shooter later died from his wounds.
  • June 1, 2016 – Los Angeles, California, 3 dead, 0 injured. 2016 UCLA shooting: A former student killed his professor and himself at UCLA. The shooter had also killed his ex-wife in Minnesota earlier.
  • June 8, 2016 – Boston, Massachusetts, 1 dead, 3 injured. Gunfire outside Jeremiah Burke High School after a fire-alarm evacuation resulted in one student dead and three others injured.
  • September 9, 2016 – Alpine, Texas, 1 dead, 2 injured. A 14-year-old girl shot another girl in the restroom at Alpine High School before killing herself. A police officer was also accidentally shot by another officer.
  • September 28, 2016 – Townville, South Carolina, 2 dead, 3 injured. A teen opened fire at Townville Elementary School, wounding three students and a teacher. The shooter's father was later found dead. Six-year-old Jacob Hall died days after the shooting.
  • July 7–8, 2016 – Dallas, Texas, 2 dead, 1 injured. A gunman who killed five police officers during a protest entered El Centro College, shooting at officers inside. He was killed by a bomb robot.
  • November 11, 2016 – Auburn, Michigan, 0 dead, 1 injured. A sheriff's deputy accidentally fired his gun inside Bay City Western High School. The bullet hit a teacher, causing a minor neck injury.

2017

  • January 20, 2017 – Naperville, Illinois, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 37-year-old man, Matthew Lange, was shot and killed while waiting in his car at Scullen Middle School.
  • April 10, 2017 – San Bernardino, California, 3 dead, 1 injured. Cedric Anderson shot and killed his estranged wife and an 8-year-old student at North Park Elementary School before killing himself. Another student was injured.
  • May 4, 2017 – Irving, Texas, 2 dead, 0 injured. Adrian Torres fatally shot a 20-year-old student, Janeera Gonzalez, at North Lake College before killing himself.
  • September 13, 2017 – Rockford, Washington, 1 dead, 3 injured. A student opened fire at Freeman High School, killing one student and injuring three others.
  • October 19, 2017 – Lubbock, Texas, 1 dead, 0 injured. A Texas Tech University student shot and killed a police officer at the campus police station.
  • October 25, 2017 – Grambling, Louisiana, 2 dead, 0 injured. Two men were shot and killed on the Grambling State University campus.
  • November 14, 2017 – Rancho Tehama, California, 6 dead, 18 injured. During the Rancho Tehama shootings, a gunman injured a student at Rancho Tehama Elementary School and killed five adults before killing himself.
  • December 7, 2017 – Aztec, New Mexico, 3 dead, 0 injured. A former student entered Aztec High School and killed two students before taking his own life.

2018

  • January 20, 2018 – Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 1 dead, 0 injured. A student was fatally shot at a party at Wake Forest University.
  • January 23, 2018 – Marshall County, Kentucky, 2 dead, 18 injured. Gabriel Ross Parker, a 15-year-old student, shot 16 people in the lobby at Marshall County High School. Two students were killed, and 18 others were injured.
  • January 31, 2018 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 32-year-old man was fatally shot during a fight in the parking lot outside a basketball game at Lincoln High School.
  • February 14, 2018 – Parkland, Florida, 17 dead, 17 injured. Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former student, opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17 people and injuring 17 others.
  • February 24, 2018 – Savannah, Georgia, 1 dead, 0 injured. A non-student was shot on campus at Savannah State University and later died.
  • March 2, 2018 – Mount Pleasant, Michigan, 2 dead, 0 injured. A student at Central Michigan University shot and killed his parents on campus before fleeing and being arrested 15 hours later.
  • March 7, 2018 – Birmingham, Alabama, 1 dead, 2 injured. A student was killed, and two others injured in a shooting at Huffman High School, initially labeled accidental.
  • March 20, 2018 – Great Mills, Maryland, 2 dead, 1 injured. A student at Great Mills High School fatally shot a female student and wounded a male student before taking his own life.
  • May 18, 2018 – Santa Fe, Texas, 10 dead, 14 injured. Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a 17-year-old student, opened fire at Santa Fe High School, killing 10 people and injuring 14.
  • May 18, 2018 – Jonesboro, Georgia, 1 dead, 3 injured. A person was killed, and three others injured after a high school graduation ceremony at Mount Zion High School.
  • July 3, 2018 – Overland Park, Kansas, 1 dead, 1 injured. A worker was shot and killed at Sunrise Point Elementary School during a dispute with another worker.
  • August 4, 2018 – Edgewood, Maryland, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 19-year-old was fatally shot in a car in the parking lot of Edgewood High School.
  • September 5, 2018 – Providence, Rhode Island, 1 dead, 1 injured. A student was killed, and the shooter accidentally shot himself outside Providence Career and Technical Academy.
  • September 11, 2018 – North Las Vegas, Nevada, 1 dead, 0 injured. An 18-year-old student was fatally shot at Canyon Springs High School.

  • January 11, 2020 - Dallas, Texas, 1 dead, 1 injured. An 18-year-old student died from injuries sustained during a shooting at a high school basketball game. A 15-year-old suspect was charged with murder after turning himself in .
  • January 14, 2020 - Bellaire, Texas, 1 dead. A 19-year-old student was shot and killed at Bellaire High School. A 16-year-old student was arrested and charged with manslaughter .
  • January 31, 2020 - Antioch, California, 1 dead. A 16-year-old student was killed in a large fight after a basketball game at Deer Valley High School .
  • February 3, 2020 - Commerce, Texas, 2 dead. Two women, including a Texas A&M University-Commerce student, were shot and killed in a dormitory. The suspect was the ex-boyfriend of one of the victims .
  • February 4, 2020 - Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1 dead. A 22-year-old employee of the Louisiana Culinary Institute was shot and killed in the parking lot by the ex-boyfriend of his girlfriend .
  • March 15, 2020 - Humble, Texas, 1 dead. A 19-year-old was killed after an argument escalated on the football field of Atascocita High School .
  • September 16, 2020 - Sonora, California, 1 dead. A 17-year-old student was shot and killed in the parking lot of Sonora High School .
  • December 17, 2020 - Birmingham, Alabama, 1 dead. A University of Alabama at Birmingham student was shot and killed in a campus parking lot .

2021

  • February 26, 2021 - New Orleans, Louisiana:  1 dead. A Tulane University police officer was shot and killed while trying to break up a fight at a high school basketball game .
  • March 1, 2021 - Pine Bluff, Arkansas: 1 dead, A 15-year-old student was shot and killed in a targeted shooting at Watson Chapel Junior High School .
  • April 12, 2021 - Knoxville, Tennessee: 1 dead. A student was shot and killed during a confrontation with police at Austin-East High School .
  • April 27, 2021 - Smyrna, Delaware:  1 dead. A man shot and killed his wife in the parking lot of Smyrna Middle School .
  • June 8, 2021 - Kansas City, Kansas: 1 dead. A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed in front of Hazel Grove Elementary School .
  • August 13, 2021 - Albuquerque, New Mexico: 1 dead, A 13-year-old student shot and killed another 13-year-old student during lunch at Washington Middle School .
  • August 27, 2021 - Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania: 1 dead. A drive-by shooting after a high school football game resulted in the death of an 8-year-old girl. Police officers returning fire likely struck her.
  • September 1, 2021 - Winston-Salem, North Carolina: 1 dead. A student was shot and killed at Mount Tabor High School .

  • November 30, 2021 - Oxford Township, Michigan: 4 dead, 7 injured. Four students were killed and seven others injured in the Oxford High School shooting. The 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody .
  • November 30, 2021 - Humboldt, Tennessee: 1 dead. One person was killed in a shooting outside the gym during basketball games between Humboldt High School and North Side .
  • December 6, 2021 - Wilmington, California: 1 dead. A 12-year-old was killed, and his stepmother was wounded during a shooting outside Wilmington Park Elementary School .
  • January 19, 2022 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1 dead. A 15-year-old boy was shot twice and killed while boarding a school van outside Oliver Citywide Academy. Two gunmen approached and shot him. The suspects were later arrested in April 2023.

2022

  • January 29, 2022 – Beloit, Wisconsin, 1 dead. A 19-year-old man was killed in the parking lot of Beloit Memorial High School after a fight broke out. The suspect was arrested two months later.
  • February 1, 2022 – Richfield, Minnesota, 1 dead. A 15-year-old student was shot and killed, and another student was critically injured during a fight at South Education Center.
  • February 1, 2022 – Bridgewater, Virginia, 2 dead. Two campus police officers were shot and killed at Bridgewater College. The shooter was taken into custody.
  • March 7, 2022 – Des Moines, Iowa, 1 dead. A 15-year-old male student was killed in a drive-by shooting outside East High School. Two others were critically injured. Several teenagers were later arrested and charged with murder.
  • March 31, 2022 – Greenville, South Carolina, 1 dead. A 12-year-old student was shot and killed by another student at Tanglewood Middle School. The shooter was arrested shortly after.
  • April 8, 2022 – Bronx, New York, 1 dead. A 17-year-old girl was shot and killed outside University Prep High School in a stairway. Two others were injured.
  • April 22, 2022 – Washington, D.C., 2 dead, 1 injured. A gunman fired over 200 shots toward the Edmund Burke School, killing one person and wounding others. The gunman later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
  • May 18, 2022 – Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 1 dead. A Riverdale High School graduate was shot and killed following a graduation ceremony on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
  • May 24, 2022 – Uvalde, Texas, 21 dead and 17 wounded. 19 students and 2 teachers were killed, and 17 others were wounded when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School. The shooter was killed by responding officers.
  • May 31, 2022 – New Orleans, Louisiana, 1 dead. Three people were shot after a graduation ceremony at Xavier University. One victim, an elderly woman, was killed.
  • September 27, 2022 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1 dead, 4 injured. A 14-year-old boy was killed, and four others were wounded in a shooting after a football scrimmage at Roxborough High School.
  • September 28, 2022 – Oakland, California, 1 dead. One person died from injuries sustained during a shooting that wounded five others at Rudsdale Newcomer High School. The victim died in November 2022.
  • September 30, 2022 – Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1 dead, 3 injured. One person was killed and three others were injured in a shooting near McLain High School during a homecoming game.
  • October 5, 2022 – Tucson, Arizona, 1 dead. A professor at the University of Arizona was shot and killed by a former student.
  • October 24, 2022 – St. Louis, Missouri, 2 dead. A gunman opened fire at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School, killing two people and injuring several others before being killed by police.
  • November 8, 2022 – Seattle, Washington, 1 dead. A student was shot and killed at Ingraham High School. Another student was arrested.
  • November 12, 2022 – Orlando, Florida, 1 dead, 2 injured. A 19-year-old was killed, and two others were injured in a shooting during a football game at Jones High School.
  • November 13, 2022 – Charlottesville, Virginia, 3 dead. A student at the University of Virginia shot and killed three students, all members of the university's football team.
  • November 19, 2022 – Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1 dead. A student from the University of New Mexico was shot and killed after an altercation with a New Mexico State University basketball player, who returned fire.
  • November 27, 2022 – Tallahassee, Florida, 1 dead, 4 injured. One person was killed, and four others were injured when a shooter opened fire on a basketball court at Florida A&M University.
  • December 16, 2022 – Chicago, Illinois, 2 dead. Two students were shot and killed outside Benito Juarez High School. Two others were injured.

  • January 4, 2023 – Detroit, Michigan, 1 dead, 0 injured. A man was shot and killed in front of Trix Academy. At least 20 rounds were fired at him.
  • January 23, 2023 – Des Moines, Iowa, 2 dead, 1 injured. Two students were killed and the program director was wounded after a shooting at a charter school. Multiple suspects were arrested.
  • February 13, 2023 – East Lansing, Michigan, 4 dead, 5 injured. 2023 Michigan State University shooting: A man shot several people on the Michigan State University campus, killing three and wounding five before killing himself after being confronted by police.
  • March 20, 2023 – Arlington, Texas, 1 dead, 1 injured. In the parking lot of Arlington Lamar High School, two students were shot, one fatally. A teenager who was not a student was arrested for the shooting.
  • March 22, 2023 – Denver, Colorado, 1 dead, 2 injured. 17-year-old Austin Lyle, a student at East High School, shot and wounded two administrators during a pat-down. Lyle fled and was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
  • March 27, 2023 – Nashville, Tennessee, 7 dead, 1 injured. 2023 Covenant School shooting: A shooting occurred at Covenant School in the Green Hills neighborhood. Six people were killed, consisting of three students and three staff members, and a police officer was injured by shattered glass. The shooter was killed by two responding Metropolitan Nashville Police Department officers.
  • April 10, 2023 – Louisville, Kentucky, 1 dead, 1 injured. Two people were shot outside a building on the Jefferson Community and Technical College campus. The shooting occurred on the same day as a separate shooting in Louisville, though the two were unrelated.
  • April 24, 2023 – Midwest City, Oklahoma, 1 dead, 0 injured. A man shot and killed another man at Rose State College.
  • May 12, 2023 – Lenoir City, Tennessee, 1 dead, 0 injured. A man accidentally shot and killed himself while leaving a graduation ceremony at Lenoir City High School.

  • September 15, 2023 – Country Club Hills, Illinois, 1 dead, 0 injured. A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot following a homecoming football game at Hillcrest High School.

  • January 29, 2024 – Austin, Texas, 1 dead. An 18-year-old student was shot and killed by a fellow student in the parking lot of John B. Connally High School after an altercation.
  • February 16, 2024 – Colorado Springs, Colorado, 2 dead. Two people were shot and killed in a dormitory at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.
  • April 21, 2024 – Dover, Delaware, 1 dead. A woman was shot and killed outside a dormitory at Delaware State University.
  • April 22, 2024 – West Richland, Washington, 1 dead. A woman was shot and killed outside Wiley Elementary School during dismissal. The alleged shooter, her ex-husband, became a fugitive and later died by suicide as police closed in.
  • April 24, 2024 – Arlington, Texas, 1 dead. An 18-year-old Bowie High School student was shot and killed on campus. Another student was arrested for the shooting.

  • July 26, 1764 - Greencastle, Pennsylvania, 11 dead, 1 injured. Enoch Brown school massacre: Four Lenape Native Americans attacked a school, killing the teacher, Enoch Brown, and 10 students. They shot Brown, scalped him, and beat the students to death with clubs.
  • December 13, 1898 - Charleston, West Virginia, 6 dead, 3+ injured. During a school exhibition, a group of young men attempted to break up a performance, leading to a deadly fight. Multiple people were killed, including Harry Flasher and Henry Carney.
  • May 6, 1940 - South Pasadena, California, 5 dead, 2 injured. Verlin Spencer, principal of South Pasadena Junior High, killed five colleagues after a long history of clashes. He was sentenced to life in prison but released in 1970.
  • August 1, 1966 - Austin, Texas, 18 dead, 31 injured. University of Texas tower shooting: Charles Whitman opened fire from the university’s observation deck, killing 15 people. He had murdered his wife and mother earlier that day.
  • November 12, 1966 - Mesa, Arizona, 5 dead, 2 injured. Robert Smith shot seven people at Rose-Mar College of Beauty, killing five. He was sentenced to death, later commuted to life in prison.
  • July 12, 1976 - Fullerton, California, 7 dead, 2 injured. Edward Charles Allaway, a custodian, opened fire at California State University, Fullerton, killing seven. He was found insane and confined to a mental institution.
  • February 24, 1984 - Los Angeles, California, 3 dead, 12 injured. Tyrone Mitchell opened fire at 49th Street Elementary School, killing two people and wounding others before committing suicide.
  • September 26, 1988 - Greenwood, South Carolina, 2 dead, 9 injured. James William Wilson entered Oakland Elementary School and killed two students, Shequila Tawoon Bradley and Tequila Maria Thomas, before being sentenced to death.
  • January 17, 1989 - Stockton, California, 6 dead, 32 injured. Patrick Edward Purdy shot and killed five children at Cleveland Elementary School before taking his own life.
  • November 1, 1991 - Iowa City, Iowa, 6 dead, 1 injured. Former graduate student Gang Lu shot and killed five University of Iowa faculty members and students before killing himself.

  • May 21, 1998 - Springfield, Oregon, 4 dead, 25 injured. Kip Kinkel killed his parents and then opened fire at Thurston High School, killing two students and injuring 25 others. He was sentenced to 111 years in prison.
