Local Sheriff's Office Finds Success in Displaying Faith
POLK COUNTY, Ga. - The Polk County Sheriff's Office has found success in its "In God We Trust" decals.
In September, the agency joined others across the state that began putting the stickers on patrol cars. Some people supported the initiative and decided to buy the decals for their own cars. However, the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation said it received dozens of complaints from across the country about the items. The group said people called the stickers 'unconstitutional' and a violation of the separation of church and state.
Polk County Sheriff Johnny Moats told FOX 5 no one from his area took issue.
"You get these small groups of people who try to take away things I was brought up on, and this country was founded on," Moats said. "I am just sick and tired of people dictating what you can and can't do, or what you can and can't say."
The Polk County community is speaking out with its wallet. The Sheriff's Office is selling the decals for $2 each. Moats said, so far, it has raised $1,000. And every dime will go toward clothes and toys for children this holiday season.
"We got a lot of needy families in our community, and this is just a way we can show our support," Moats said.
There are 100 "In God We Trust" decals left for sale at the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
