Macon man sentenced 25 years for bank robbery, attempted bank robbery

A Macon man who terrorized bank employees and customers during a series of armed robberies in 2022 has pleaded guilty and faces up to 25 years in federal prison.

Felix Cordes, 57, admitted to robbing two Macon credit unions and attempting a third robbery, stealing $38,274 in total. U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell accepted his guilty plea on Jan. 2. Cordes is facing a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. A sentencing date has not yet been set, and there is no parole in the federal system.

According to court records, Cordes carried out his first robbery at MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union on April 2, 2022. Disguised in overalls, a bandana, and sunglasses, he brandished a handgun, ordered tellers to hand over cash, and emptied two drawers himself. Victims reported panic attacks due to his intimidation tactics.

On May 2, 2022, Cordes, with an accomplice, robbed the Central Georgia Regional Credit Union while wearing blue latex gloves and carrying a firearm. Later that month, on May 24, Cordes attempted a third robbery at another MidSouth Credit Union location, but vigilant staff locked down the bank after spotting him and his accomplice approaching with a silver handgun.

Evidence collected during the investigation included matching clothing and gloves seen in surveillance footage, a box of 9mm ammunition, and cellphones purchased with stolen money.

"Bank tellers were terrified when Felix Cordes walked into their workplace and threatened them with a firearm," said U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary. "Individuals whose criminal actions terrorize our community will be held accountable."

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joy Odom is prosecuting the case.
