Earlier this month, deputies were escorting Black's estranged wife to his home on Old Draketown Trail, so she could pick up her things. Chief Robinson said the process was very cordial until the wife asked deputies to ask Black if she could move her vehicle closer to the home. According to Chief Robinson, Black responded that he wasn’t moving anything and that’s when the situation deteriorated.

Deputies said Black set fire to some of her clothes, then went after a deputy sheriff who went to the home to investigate. Black is accused of attacking the deputy sheriff with a fire extinguisher and then fleeing the scene. He ran into some nearby woods.

The injured deputy only suffered a swollen arm.

Deputies from Carroll and Paulding Counties used K-9s in the ground search, while two helicopters from Carroll County searched from the air. Members of the Georgia State Patrol joined Carroll County deputies in blocking nearby roads, but eventually called off the search.

"He's got PTSD. He's depressed because my mother left him because he's been acting crazy and stupid lately. He's probably just out there in the woods watching all of this,” Black's son Barry Black, Jr. said earlier this month. "He just needs help."

Black is currently out of jail on a $20,000 bond.
