ATLANTA - A man found dead on Broad Street in southwest Atlanta early Monday morning marks the city's first homicide of the year.
The body was located just before 7 a.m. An ambulance responded to the scene, but emergency workers were not able to revive the man. According to Atlanta Police Major Adam Lee, the victim was shot in the head. Police said there was no sign of a struggle and believe the man was killed shortly before his body was discovered.
Detectives closed off a section of the roadway between Mitchell Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to conduct an investigation. Lee said police will review video footage from surveillance cameras from area businesses in hopes of identifying the killer.
The victim's friends gathered at the scene to honor the deceased man, who hasn't been identified. "Whoever did it you did that wrong because that man didn't have to die like that," Sean Jordan told FOX 5's Deidra Dukes. "The last thing that man told me was 'If aint nobody told you today I love you, I love you.' "
The victim is described as being in his 40's and having lived on the streets for several years.
