ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead in southwest Atlanta.
FOX 5 News has confirmed an Atlanta police officer shot and killed a man after police say the man pulled out a gun during a foot chase through the woods.
Police say the shooting happened around 1 a.m. Sunday after an officer was flagged down on the 2600 block of Metropolitan Parkway with a report of shots fired.
Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Jeff Glazier told FOX 5 the officer immediately spotted the suspect.
"He chased the suspect through the woods," Glazier said.
At some point during the chase, APD says the man pulled a gun on the officer.
"Our officer fired, hit and killed, the suspect," Glazier said.
Police say the officer was not injured in the shooting.
According to Atlanta police, the man's handgun was recovered at the scene.
Investigators are still working to determine whether there was an exchange of gunfire.
The GBI says this is the 26th officer-involved shooting investigation that the agency has been asked to investigate this year.
